Thursday is my favorite day of the week. More accurately, Thursday night is my favorite night of the week. TV Night.
I know some writers shun TV - I used to do that. But you know what? My writing was stuck back in the '80s, and my dialogue was in the toilet. (Some of my writing is still stuck in the '80s, but #donttellmyteacher - I'm working on that, I promise.)
TV is a way for those of us who don't live with representative members of our target audience to get with the program in terms of our dialogue. Why pass up an opportunity like that? I say, pick a new show every week that your audience watches, make up a big bowl of popcorn, grab your notepad, and settle in. You just might learn something.
What do you think? Are you a TV lover, or a TV shunner?
I watch TV every day, although it's always PBS. :P
ReplyDeleteI don't shun television like some people do, but I'm not addicted to it, either.
Hubs and I have our shows. We have to catch up on all of them through HULU(I LURV Hulu!) But I most of my fav's come on Thursday night too.(we don't get them till Friday)
ReplyDeleteI just don't get people who HATE T.V. I mean, I understand but I don't get it.
I don't shun TV at all. I love it. I only wish I got more English shows on cable here in Korea. I have to download my shows.
ReplyDeleteEagle, I LOVE PBS! Who couldn't love the channel that gave us Sesame Street?
ReplyDeleteColene, I wish I got HULU here in Canada! I've heard it's great.
Quinn, I know what you mean about having to download shows. I had to do that when I lived in the UK. Where would we TV lovers be without the internet?
I agree. TV is a great resource for us writers. I write YA. I have 3 teenagers living at home, but I still find watching TV to be helpful.
ReplyDeleteI just hosted a TV blogfest, so I think you know the answer to that question! Tonight's a good night - CSI and Fringe.
ReplyDeleteSusan, YES - I definitely agree. TV is one good way to tap in to the public consciousness.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I like CSI too, although Grey's Anatomy takes precedence for me. (I catch CSI with my On Demand service that comes with our cable package, so I still don't miss it.) I haven't checked out Fringe, but it's on my list of shows to try.
I will stop writing to watch my favorite shows. Medium, Friday nights and the rest I get on cable with on demand. A new one, The Event, is really great. Rubicon, Breaking Bad and some reality T.V. Ace of Cakes, History channel and the Discovery Channel.

I saw the pilot of The Event, and I liked it. I missed the next couple of episodes, so I'll have to catch it on demand, but it's one I'm definitely interested in. You have to really concentrate when you watch it!
ReplyDeleteI'm a convert, plan to watch much more tv and write and the same time :)
